Port City Community Church was founded in 1999 with a fundamental mission: to connect with individuals and guide them in their spiritual journey with God. From its inception, the church has prioritized reaching people within the context of their existing social networks and relationships. With an unwavering commitment to supporting individuals in their walk with Christ and a strong belief in the transformative power of Christ's message, the church has seen remarkable growth, now boasting a weekly attendance of around 5,000 individuals. Port City Community Church, now one of North Carolina's largest and most rapidly expanding congregations, was established in 1999. It was founded by Pastor Mike Ashcraft and his brother-in-law, Chris Kuhne, who currently serves as the Pastor of Worship Arts. They embarked on this journey with the support of 29 dedicated volunteers and participants, and the very first service drew an attendance of 84 individuals. By 2001, the congregation had grown significantly to reach 242 attendees. Over the next four years, the church's staff expanded to 13 members, and attendance surged to an impressive 1,900. To accommodate this growth, the church introduced two Sunday services and, recognizing the need for a permanent space, began the search for suitable facilities as they outgrew their initial location in a middle school.
With the assistance of local church members, Port City Community Church successfully identified a 32-acre parcel of land situated in the central geographical area of Wilmington. This property was made available through the efforts of several dedicated church members who generously offered the church the opportunity to acquire the land. After finalizing plans for the construction of a 90,000-square-foot facility, construction commenced in late 2006. The inaugural services at the new location on Vision Drive were conducted on July 20, 2008. By 2009, attendance had surged to 4,500, leading the church to expand from three services to four. In 2010, the leadership team initiated discussions about implementing a multi-campus strategy, and in January 2011, the first multisite campus opened in Leland, North Carolina, just 20 minutes away from Wilmington at Belville Elementary School. Presently, the church conducts four worship services each week at its primary Wilmington site.
